SITE RATING: 7/10
SITE REVIEW:
New Zealand-borne British conductor Ross Pople leads a very sure Messiah that will
be sure to please most listeners, with his own London Festival
Orchestra playing, and the small forces of the Tallis
Chamber Choir
giving a very unified, tight reading of the score. Tenor
Richard
Edgar-Wilson is a bit florid for my tastes, singing with plenty of
high operatic style, but it's "bass" David Barrell who is the
curiosity on this recording; he's not a bass at all but a Welsh tenor
(!) his tone is quite light, and he struggles to reach the low pitches!
Why he was cast here is one of those mysteries that I suspect
I'll never discover. Of the other soloists, alto Yvonne
Howards
has a strong vibrato in her tone, but lots of dramatic weight in her
solos, and soprano Ann Liebeck sounds slightly challenged in her role,
with pitch problems in the higher reaches. I also heard a
couple
of errors in the trumpets, which leads to believe, though it's not
stated explicitly in the notes, that this might be a live performance.
If so, it's a overall fine one, with brisk, bright tempos and
generally bright singing.
