SITE REVIEW:
A 1959 Der
Messias conducted by Heinz Mende, I was somewhat surprised
to see that tenor Fritz Wunderlich received top billing over anyone
else; it's even his picture on the cover, instead of, say, Handel, or
Jesus. But one listen to this recording makes evident why the
producers made Wunderlich the darling of this Messias.
He is so far above the rest of the troupe in both prowess and
appeal that he seems to have stepped in from a different recording.
Myto Records, who released this performance on CD, doesn't
seem to have brightened up or improved upon the original sound
recording - the mono sound is very flat and dim - but even if it were
remastered to SACD brilliance, it wouldn't aid the performance
- Heinz Mende's style of
conducting is very square and blocked; you can practically hear the
hard, straight downbeats of his baton in the blunt singing of the
chorus and in the straight, rigid playing of the Südfunk
Symphony
Orchestra. The only time the orchestra exhibits any feeling in their
playing is when Wunderlich steps to the fore, as on the lovely "Behold
and
See" and "He did not leave His soul in hell", but even these
performances are undercut by some loud coughing which is present from
the audience or chorus. The other soloists have little to
recommend them - both soprano Tilla Briem and alto Margarete Bence
pale in performance and tone to Wunderlich's splendid control and
resonance, wilting under his brilliance like flowers on a hot day; only
bass Otto Von Rohr is able to come close to matching Wunderlich in
tone. The Stuttgart Philharmonic Choir sings with not a trace
of tenderness - it's all strong hammer-like blows, which makes for very
tiring listening. In short, if you want to hear a superb
heroic
German tenor in the prime of his voice, you should seek out this
recording, but just be aware that he is the only reason for this
recording to exist.
