SITE RATING: 9/10
SITE REVIEW:
Sir Neville Marriner rarely disappoints on his
recordings of Messiah - he
completely understands how to make Handel's
music dance - and on this, his second Messiah
and (so far) his only Mozart/German one, he again delivers a
marvellous, entrancing performance -
everyone, from the soloists to the orchestral and choral ensembles,
appear to be completely immersed in the music, giving stunningly
involved readings of the entire oratorio. The Stuttgart Radio
Symphony plays with a beguiling lightness and freedom, with stunning
instrumental colors bleeding through that I'd never heard before; The
Südfunkchor sings with passion, power and perfectly blended tones,
the soloists are uniformly fine, rich and powerful with the famous
Lucia Popp giving a perfectly-pitched (although somewhat ripe)
performance, and tenor Robert Gambill a terrifically heroic presence.
This Messiah
may be a bit too "big" and old-school for modern listeners, however I
found it uniformly thrilling from start to finish, with lavish sound,
huge choruses, expressive feeling, and a deep humanity present that is
all too rare on most Messiahs.
This may be Sir Neville Marriner's greatest Messiah on record, and considering
his accomplishments, that's saying a lot.
