SITE REVIEW:
I have often been annoyed, or confused by various interpretations and performances of Messiah,
but rarely have I been indifferent, or bored. THIS performance is
the exception. A live recording from 1993, Jean-Claude Malgoire
apparently felt no need to disturb the audience with anything
approaching a brisk, dynamic, or by contrast - a slow, grand performance; instead he
choose to set everything at a moderate, walking tempo, with dynamics
that range from mezzo-forte to mezzo-piano. Honestly, it felt as
if the entire ensemble was sleepwalking through their songs - nothing
here is a standout, although all of the players are certainly competent
and play and sing well - it's just that after listening (even WHILE
you're listening) the performance fades away into the background, with
little to no impact upon the hearer. Luckily, Mozart included
some horns in "For Unto Us A Child Is Born" - it was the only thing
that stirred me from my stupor upon trying to keep my attention focused
on the performance. If you prefer your Baroque oratorios very
mild, then this is the Messiah for you, otherwise, I'd advise to steer clear of this decidedly indifferent performance.
