SITE RATING: 7/10
SITE REVIEW:
First of all, you should know that the track
division above is a bit of a cheat - the full recording of this Messiah
is only available as a digital download, so I'm guessing as to the
actual division of tracks between the two discs. There are
physical CDs available of the highlights disc, but none for the full
recording. As to the performance, there are two conductors
listed, Salius Sondeckis for the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, and
Imants Kokars for the Chorus Ave Sol, which leads me to suspect they
might have been recorded separately, but aurally, there is no evidence
of this. The choir and orchestra work together with great
finesse, with the small, precise forces coming together in admirable
unity. There are heavy Latvian accents present, from both the choir,
and the unnamed soloists, but looking past that, this is an enjoyable
recording that I return to frequently, and the small cost required for
the complete download make this a good choice for the budget-conscious
consumer who nevertheless desires a quality performance. The
tempos are light and quick, with a definite baroque feel to the affair,
the soloists are uniformly fine, although I wish there was more
information given as to who they are. A good, inexpensive
recording that impressed me with its quality.
