SITE REVIEW:
Helmut Koch's 1975 Messiah,
recorded in German, has little to recommend it over other recordings.
Generally stiff performances, suspect tonal colors, thudding
tempos and poor recorded sound places this release firmly in the lower
tier of Messiahs.
Tenor
Peter Schreier has a nasal, forward tone that I found distinctly
unpleasant, Theo Adam acquits himself nicely in his bass arias, alto
Heidi Ries has a darkly male tone; and soprano Regina Werner's strident
arias lack the grace and beauty of others. The Berlin Radio
Symphony Orchestra and Chorus both sound distantly placed in relation
to the microphones, lacking any presence, although they have some
choice performance moments: "Glory To God in the Highest" and "Worthy
Is The Lamb" both receive glorious readings, but the ambient sound
simply isn't up to modern standards. Koch's conducting can
best
be described as leaden - I suspect he was attempting a severely
Germanic sound, such as Mackerras's
superb 1974 Messiah,
but whereas Mackerras's direction had command and force,
Koch's
conducting sounds tired, and a bit defeated. One of the more
conspicuous failures in the Messiah
oeuvre.
