SITE REVIEW:
A disappointingly brief excerpt of what sounds to be an
absolutely thrilling live performance of Handel's Messiah, performed by the Folger
Consort and the Men and Boys of Magdelen College, Oxford, along with
select soloists. Recorded live in Washington D.C., on December
20-23, 1993, this six movement EP made it's debut on the web just this
week, and what a shame that it's not the complete performance!
Despite some annoying extant sounds that creep in, (including
what sounds like a strident school bell!) the Folger Consort plays with
a magnificent fire and force, giving this performance a rare driving
energy that so many Messiahs
lack. Soloists are similarly excellent, with world-class efforts
given on single arias from Soprano Ann Monoyios, counter-tenor Drew
Minter, and bass William Sharp. The Men and Boys of Magdelen
College, Oxford acquit themselves well, with my main complaint being
the trebles being buried in the mix behind the more forceful adult
voices. But still, this is a thrilling short taste of a
modern-day Messiah, full of expertise, passion, and electricity.
Although it's available for sale above, you can (as of this
writing) also download it for FREE from CDBaby.com,
and at that price, it's a steal.
