SITE RATING: 4/10
SITE REVIEW:
Denon
Classics, which in 2009 released a series of "Internet-only" downloads,
boasts that its roster features world-renowned orchestras and
conductors, but somehow, their Messiah
release, featuring the Lettisches Sinfonieorcheste and conducted by
Alexandr Dmitrijew, misses on both counts. A German-language
release, this echo-drenched, rather ham-fisted reading does nothing to
polish Denon Classics reputation as a classical powerhouse, and adds
nothing to the Messiah canon
of recordings. The largest problem with Internet downloads is the
utter lack of documentation - nothing about the soloists, choir or
production is offered, and no Internet information can be found about
either the orchestra or conductor, which leads me to believe that both
of them are small, anonymous, and therefore, "cheaply" hired stooges.
The recording has its moments: a thrilling "Halleluja" and finely
toned, if occasionally shrill soprano - the chorus is distantly placed,
and almost drowned in echo; the tenor and bass soloists are both
thickly voiced, and the tempos are square and ponderous.
Strangely, despite being a "highlights" disc of only eighteen
tracks, Denon released a second, "choruses only" disc of the same
recording which omits the five solos on this release, paring that
"highlights of highlights" album to a paltry thirteen tracks, and
further cluttering the Internet with yet more pointless confusion.
