SITE RATING: 8/10
SITE REVIEW:
Not available for purchase in the United States,
this German-label, English-language Messiah is
well-worth tracking down, although the steep international price may
put off some purchasers. Conducted by Roland Büchner, and
featuring the boy choir Regensburger Domspatzen, as well
as the Czechoslovakian orchestral forces of the Musica Florea Prag, this Messiah is
beautifully performed by all involved. Taken from a live 2003
performance, the recorded ambience is excellent, with no noticable
audience noise, and a close, balanced mix from soloists, choir, and
orchestra. The soloists are uniformly good, with tenor Hubert
Nettinger a fine, vibrant tenor, male alto Yosemeh Adjei impressive in
his arias, bass Yorck Felix Speer resonant and splendid, and
soprano Katharine Fuge posesses a young, boyish tone which I found very
appealing, although she struggles in pushing out her upper register,
almost "belting" the top notes (!). The Regensburger Boy
Choir is excellent, with lovely tone, excellent unity, and crisp
diction. As for the playing by the Musica Florea Prag, they
play period instruments with similarly sharp unity. Büchner's
direction is perhaps more workmanlike than virtuostic; but his tempos
are bright and easy, and he seems to bring out the best in everyone's
performance - there is a genial, good-natured feel to this Messiah that is
lacking from many other recordings, and despite its price, I'm very
happy to have it in my collection, and recommend it to others.
